SEASONAL NOTES
February 2012
- ROCKFISH (Striped Bass)-Maryland and Virginia both opened their seasons on Feb. 1st. The MD quota will probably be caught in about a month or so. VA should be open until April. Prices should be relatively low for the next few weeks as the mild weather has kept the fish from migrating too far south.
- SUMMER FLUKE (Flounder) - North Carolina is open now and Virginia re-opens Feb. 15th and runs through May 1st. We should be seeing lots of “sushi-quality” flounder at reasonable prices this spring.
- SWORDFISH &TUNA-Again milder winter weather is providing lots of fish. We are seeing lots of spectacular fish out of the Gulf of Mexico but strong demand for “sushi-quality” fish is keeping the prices high.
- HALIBUT- the Atlantic season is if full swing and prices are falling (finally). Alaska opens in mid-March, however another significant cut in the allowable catch quota will mean very high prices again this summer.
- LOBSTER-Mild weather and a record breaking year of landings mean the price of lobster is quite low. It is so low in fact some fishermen are electing not to fish in order to drive up the price. In addition to live lobsters we are also featuring excellent Downeast Lobster Tails. These are 8-9 ounce frozen tails that were caught and processed especially for freezing. The quality is excellent and the price is good too.
- WILD SALMON-Not much to speak of here; just previously frozen fish available until mid-May.
- NANTUCKET BAY SCALLOPS-We are well into the season now and are seeing limited availability and higher prices, regrettably things will wrap up soon.
- STONE CRAB CLAWS-We are seeing some of the biggest and best claws in recent memory this year. The season should run until mid-May.
FRESH LOCAL DAIRY-We are getting weekly deliveries from The Trickling Springs Creamery in Chambersburg, PA and the product is incredible!
